Help for the need in front of you
Food, housing & essentials
Call 211 or visit United Way 211 for local referrals. Explore USAGov government benefits for food, housing, healthcare, and other assistance. Availability and eligibility vary locally.
Work & training
Find an American Job Center for job-search and training support. For government applications, use the agency contact in the announcement; USAJOBS explains who handles what.
Veteran benefits
VA benefits: 1-800-827-1000. VA health eligibility: 1-877-222-8387. Official VA contact source.
Business planning
Find SBA local assistance and veteran business support. Boots to Business questions: 202-205-8381, from SBA’s official program page.
Mental health & connection
For ongoing care, start with your primary care provider, health plan, installation behavioral health office, or local community clinic. FindTreatment.gov lists treatment options; confirm services, availability, and costs with the provider.
For U.S. emotional distress or suicidal crisis, call 988, text 988, or use https://988lifeline.org/chat/. Source: https://988lifeline.org, verified through the helpline directory October 13, 2026. For an immediate emergency in the U.S., call 911.
SAMHSA treatment referral information: 1-800-662-HELP (4357). Official SAMHSA helplines.
Aelari’s inquiry form is not monitored for emergencies. Peer support and mental health literacy training can help people connect with care; they do not authorize diagnosis, therapy, or clinical treatment.
If you cannot get help—or disagree with a decision
- Ask for a clear next step. Say: “Which office handles this? What documents do you need? Can I get the decision and appeal instructions in writing?” Ask for an interpreter or accessibility assistance if needed.
- Keep a record. Note dates, names, reference numbers, documents submitted, and promised follow-up. Protect private information.
- Use the right escalation route. Request a supervisor or designated caseworker. Follow the specific program’s written review process and deadline. A complaint does not replace an appeal.
- If the need is urgent, seek another route now. Ask 211 for alternative local services rather than waiting on one office.
Government benefits
Contact the administering agency shown on your notice. Request the eligibility reason, missing-document list, supervisor, and appeal procedure. Use USAGov to locate the responsible program. Deadlines are program-specific.
Government hiring
Contact the hiring agency’s HR representative in the job announcement. Website support cannot decide eligibility or reverse an agency hiring decision. Agency contact guide.
VA claim decision
Read your decision letter’s deadlines; explore VA decision reviews and appeals. Seek a VA-accredited representative or VSO; confirm accreditation and any fees.
Insurance problems
Ask your insurer for the written coverage or claim reason and review procedure. Contact your state insurance department for consumer help, license checks, or complaints.
Credit or financial disputes
Dispute credit-report errors with the reporting company and information provider first. Follow CFPB’s current prerequisites before filing through its complaint portal. Keep supporting records.
Healthcare access
Contact your provider’s patient advocate or health plan’s member services. Ask for care navigation, grievance or appeal instructions, and urgent-care options appropriate to your situation. Use the official number on your plan card.
A simple call script
“I need help with [need]. I’m in [city/state]. I’ve already tried [office/action]. What can I apply for, what do I need to bring, and who handles the next step? If your office cannot help, can you refer me to the right person?”
For a denied application: “Please explain the reason in writing and tell me the review deadline and where to submit my request.”
