Compare actual job openings, training, deployment tempo, duty locations, contract guarantees and civilian credentials. Enlisted, warrant officer where available, and commissioned officer routes have different requirements. Ask about service academies, ROTC, officer candidate programs and direct commissions.

Module 02

Active duty, Reserve & National Guard

Active duty

Full-time service with military duties, training and assignments. Relocation and deployment can be part of the commitment.

Reserve

Combine civilian work or education with military service. Initial training is full time; drill, annual training, mobilizations and deployments can exceed the familiar “one weekend a month, two weeks a year.”

National Guard

Army and Air National Guard service can include state and federal missions. State education benefits and federal benefit eligibility depend on the specific program and duty status.

Before joining part time, ask about the unit location, travel costs, drill lodging, vacancies, deployment history, health coverage, retirement points and employer obligations. IRR status is different from drilling in the Selected Reserve. Benefits depend on orders and qualifying service.

Module 03

Bonuses: compare the whole offer

Official offers checked October 24, 2026. These are advertised ceilings, not a ranking of guaranteed payouts. Enlistment, retention and loan repayment are different incentives. Confirm the job code, ship window and written contract before relying on any amount.

Army

Advertises combined active enlistment incentives up to $50,000 for qualifying recruits and jobs.

Current Army offers

Navy

Advertises up to $140,000 for limited-time qualifying offers. Read its current breakdown: headline totals and stacking rules require careful comparison.

Current Navy job-by-job offers

Air Force

Its active-duty bonus page advertises up to $40,000 for qualifying careers and a six-year commitment. Confirm the current specialty list.

Current Air Force offers
Which jobs should I check first?

Start with the Navy rating-by-rating list and each branch’s current critical-skill schedules. Nuclear, special warfare, cyber, technical maintenance and other shortage specialties may carry incentives, but no occupation always pays the most. Separate first enlistment from reenlistment and officer incentives.

For Marines, compare the FY27 enlistment policy with the FY27 retention schedule. They serve different populations.

Bonus offer checklist
  • Exact MOS, rating or AFSC and required qualifications.
  • Gross amount, payment dates and tax withholding.
  • Contract years, ship date and successful training requirements.
  • What can be combined, and whether loan repayment is separate.
  • Conditions that cause loss of eligibility or repayment.
  • Written incentive annex signed before commitment.

Module 04

How pay changes

Start with basic pay by pay grade and creditable years of service. Pay can change through promotion, longevity steps shown in the table, annual authorized adjustments, changes in duty status and eligible special pays. There is no universal automatic raise percentage.

Basic pay

Enlisted E-1–E-9, warrant W-1–W-5 where applicable, and officer O-1–O-10. Rank titles vary by service; equivalent grades use the same basic-pay tables.

Allowances & special pay

Housing, subsistence and special or incentive pays depend on eligibility, location, dependents, duty and orders. Housing in kind can change allowance eligibility.

Take-home pay

Taxes, TSP elections, insurance, allotments, meal collections and debts affect the deposit. Read the Leave and Earnings Statement, not just the bank balance.

Current DFAS active and reserve pay tables · Official housing allowance information

Reserve pay is different

Inactive-duty training uses drill pay; active orders use rules tied to those orders. A drill weekend can include multiple paid training periods. Do not compare a drill-period rate with a full month of active-duty pay. Check the DFAS reserve tables and the orders.

Module 05

Promotion & career growth

Advancement depends on branch, grade, component and career field. Time in service and grade may establish eligibility; performance, professional military education, qualifications, fitness, conduct, exams or scores, selection boards and available allocations may also matter. Eligibility is not a guaranteed promotion date.

  1. Find the current promotion requirements for your service and component.
  2. Track required training, evaluations, qualifications and deadlines.
  3. Review your official personnel record and correct errors early.
  4. Ask a career counselor about commissioning, warrant routes, special duties and retraining.
  5. Compare promotion potential with civilian credentials and long-term goals.

Marine example: junior promotion requirements and competitive enlisted promotion systems differ from senior selection boards. Use current orders and your career planner for your exact grade and MOS.

Module 06

TSP & retirement

The Thrift Savings Plan is a retirement investment account. Learn Traditional versus Roth tax treatment, the G/F/C/S/I funds, Lifecycle funds, investment risk, beneficiaries and annual contribution limits before choosing an allocation.

For eligible Blended Retirement System members, service contributions include an automatic 1% and matching up to 4%. Once eligible for matching, contributing 5% of basic pay each pay period can capture the full match. Matching generally begins after two years of service; check eligibility and vesting rules. These percentages are contributions, not guaranteed investment returns.

BRS also includes a retirement pension for qualifying service and continuation pay subject to current service rules and an additional obligation. Reserve retirement uses qualifying service and points, with different pay-start rules from an active-duty retirement.

Module 07

Life insurance & health coverage

SGLI provides eligible members group term life insurance, with coverage available up to $500,000. Review your elected amount, premiums and beneficiaries in the official system, especially after marriage, divorce, births or other life changes.

Explore Family SGLI, traumatic injury protection and post-service VGLI eligibility and deadlines. Survivor Benefit Plan coverage is a separate survivor-income decision. Military life insurance is different from TRICARE health coverage.

Module 08

Loans, credit & financial protections

VA home loans

Qualifying borrowers may access a VA-backed purchase loan without a down payment when requirements are met, and without monthly private mortgage insurance. A Certificate of Eligibility does not guarantee lender approval. Credit, income, occupancy, appraisal, entitlement, closing costs and any applicable funding fee still matter.

Check VA eligibility · Understand purchase-loan terms
SCRA & the Military Lending Act

SCRA can limit interest on qualifying pre-service debts and provide other protections. MLA applies different protections to certain covered consumer credit. Neither is a blanket promise of free borrowing or approval. Ask military legal assistance about your service status and transaction.

CFPB SCRA guide
Build credit without buying benefits you do not need

Pay on time, keep revolving balances manageable, check reports for errors and compare total borrowing costs. Military status does not automatically improve a credit score. Some issuers offer fee relief or military programs; verify current terms directly, including spouse eligibility. Rewards and discounts do not outweigh interest on carried balances.

Free financial and legal resources

Module 09

Travel, discounts & everyday savings

Space-A travel

Eligible travelers can request unused seats on military flights. Eligibility, category, documents and destinations depend on status. Seats and return flights are not guaranteed; budget for commercial alternatives and lodging.

AMC eligibility and terminal guidance

Recreation & trips

Explore installation MWR, outdoor recreation rentals, ticket offices, military lodging and American Forces Travel. Verify eligible users, blackout dates, cancellation rules and the final price.

Find recreation and travel benefits

Military discounts

Ask about phone plans, retail, hotels, airlines, theme parks, gyms and vehicle services. Active duty, Reserve, veterans and family members may receive different offers. Compare the discounted total with public deals.

Before booking, check leave approval, passport and foreign travel requirements, baggage policy and identification rules. Airline military baggage benefits may depend on official orders versus personal travel.

Your next conversation

Bring these questions to a recruiter, career planner, education center or financial counselor:

  1. Which exact job and component fit my goals, and what is guaranteed in writing?
  2. What is my full service obligation, including inactive time?
  3. What happens if I cannot complete the school or obtain a clearance?
  4. What would pay, training, travel and family life look like in my situation?
  5. Which incentives and benefits do I qualify for, and when do they begin?
  6. Which credentials will help me after service?

Career comparisons

Jobs, bonuses & civilian careers

Military basic pay follows grade and service time, not the civilian value of a specialty. These are career paths to investigate, not a verified highest-to-lowest job bonus ranking. Current per-job awards are marked unverified where official public sources do not establish them. A branch-wide ceiling must not be read as every listed job’s bonus.

Branch Jobs to compare Bonus evidence & limits Civilian path
Army Cyber operations 17C; intelligence; aviation maintenance; technical trades Up to $50,000 combined qualifying active enlistment offers; individual job award requires a current quote. Search jobs with bonus availability Cybersecurity, avionics and maintenance; education and credentials may be required.
Navy Nuclear EMN/ETN/MMN; EOD; rescue swimmer; submarine technical ratings Headline up to $140,000 is not a verified cash signing bonus for each job. Separate enlistment cash from loan repayment; request the current rating schedule. Official bonus page Nuclear technician, avionics, IT and related technical careers; no automatic civilian license.
Air Force Cyber/intelligence; maintenance; special warfare and combat support Official active page advertises up to $40,000; six-year commitment and training completion. Per-AFSC ranking not established here. Current offers Cybersecurity, avionics and aviation careers.
Marine Corps ATC 7257; cyber; intelligence; aviation maintenance Use separate FY27 enlistment and retention schedules. Per-job/grade/zone awards must be checked; ATC is not represented as the largest signing bonus. Retention schedule Civilian ATC, cyber and aviation roles; FAA hiring and medical requirements apply.
Space Force Cyber, intelligence and space systems operations Official July 2026 announcement describes a $25,000 initial-enlistment pilot with an eight-year commitment. Confirm eligibility and the July 1–November 30, 2026 window. Pilot announcement Cybersecurity, technical operations and aerospace support; role-specific education may be needed.
Coast Guard Ask which critical ratings currently qualify; compare engineering, electronics and aviation Official incentives page lists up to $60,000 for critical-rating affiliation, with separate education, quick-ship and Reserve offers. Per-rating ranking and stacking must be confirmed. Official incentives Marine engineering, electronics, aviation and maritime careers.

What could you earn after service?

BLS May 2025 national annual wages below use the median as a typical-pay measure. Median is not the arithmetic average. The high-end column is the threshold exceeded by the highest-paid 10%, not a maximum, entry salary or promised veteran earnings. Military-to-civilian mappings are illustrative.

Civilian occupation Median per year Highest 10% earn more than What to check
Air traffic controller $148,080 $215,610 BLS pay, education and entry requirements
Information security analyst $129,180 $199,850 BLS pay and qualifications
Nuclear technician $110,240 $133,600 BLS nuclear technician profile
Avionics technician $82,280 $113,680 BLS avionics and aircraft maintenance profile

Location, experience, credentials, employer, clearance requirements and overtime change earnings. Review actual vacancies as well as national data. There is no defensible universal “most you can make” after getting out.

Education benefits

GI Bill: how school payments work

Post-9/11 benefits can pay approved tuition to the school and eligible housing and book payments to you. Benefit tier, attendance and program rules apply. Active-duty users do not receive Post-9/11 MHA; online-only study uses a different housing basis. School breaks and enrollment changes affect payments.

  1. Apply through VA and obtain your eligibility decision.
  2. Compare approved programs with the GI Bill Comparison Tool, including school outcomes and remaining costs.
  3. Give your eligibility information to the school certifying official and have enrollment certified.
  4. Set up direct deposit and complete required enrollment verification.
  5. Budget for partial months, payment timing and possible debts after withdrawing or changing classes.

Eligible resident MHA uses the school attendance location’s E-5-with-dependents BAH basis, adjusted for benefit tier and rate of pursuit; attendance must exceed half time. For August 1, 2026–July 31, 2027, VA lists an online-only maximum of $1,198 monthly before applicable reductions. This is a housing benefit, not wages. VA current rates and full rules

Location & cost of living

BAH in different places

Compare the same year, pay grade and dependent category across locations. Active-duty BAH generally follows the duty location and entitlement rules; GI Bill MHA uses education rules and school attendance location. They are different benefits. Overseas locations may use OHA, with different rules.

Location to compare ZIP starting point How to get the rate
San Diego, CA 92145 Use the official lookup with your grade and dependent status.
Camp Pendleton, CA 92055 Check the actual duty location ZIP rather than assuming San Diego rates.
Beaufort, SC 29904 Compare both monthly allowance and local housing costs.
Kaneohe Bay, HI 96863 Check housing area and eligibility; Hawaii cost of living differs.
Norfolk, VA 23511 Use the same grade and year for a fair comparison.

Health, separation & earned benefits

Medical separation, retirement & VA disability

Why disability compensation exists

VA compensation provides tax-free monthly payments for qualifying service-connected conditions. Conditions may be caused or aggravated by service; presumptive and secondary pathways can also apply. You do not have to be medically separated to apply. A diagnosis alone does not guarantee compensation.

VA eligibility
DoD rating versus VA rating

DoD evaluates fitness for continued service and the conditions that make you unfit. VA evaluates qualifying service-connected conditions under its benefit rules. Ratings can differ. A VA rating does not itself create military medical retirement.

In general, an eligible member found unfit with a DoD rating below 30% and fewer than 20 qualifying years may receive disability separation and severance rather than retirement. An eligible unfit member rated at least 30%, or meeting the applicable service requirement, may qualify for disability retirement. Duty status, line of duty, pre-existing conditions and other statutory requirements matter.

IDES overview · Severance eligibility and limits
What should be reviewed before separation?
  1. Get copies of medical records, duty orders, line-of-duty findings and personnel records. Describe symptoms and functional limits accurately.
  2. Work with your PEBLO through MEB/PEB or IDES. Read proposed findings and ask assigned counsel about elections, review rights and deadlines before signing.
  3. Review the final disposition, DD-214, final pay, any severance or retirement calculation and the separate VA decision.
  4. Confirm health coverage and enrollment deadlines with TRICARE; retirement coverage differs from temporary separation coverage, and neither should be assumed.
  5. Review life-insurance transition deadlines, education eligibility, VA health care and employment support.

There is no automatic identical package for everyone who leaves for medical reasons. A transition counselor, PEBLO and accredited VA representative can help check your actual entitlements.

How to claim VA disability

Identify the conditions you are claiming and submit available medical and service evidence. Attend scheduled examinations, review the written decision and use the stated review process if you disagree. Eligible separating members may use BDD between 180 and 90 days before separation. Those outside that window can still file through the applicable route.

BDD and pre-discharge claims · Find accredited claims help
How much is paid, and can payments overlap?

VA compensation depends on the combined rating, eligible dependents and other award factors. Multiple ratings are combined under VA rules rather than simply added. A 0% rating may establish service connection without monthly compensation. Current monthly compensation tables

Disability severance can be subject to recoupment from VA compensation, with exceptions. Military retired pay and VA compensation can also interact; concurrent receipt and combat-related programs have their own requirements. Do not add every headline amount together as a guaranteed income.
